The Management of the University of Jos have
slashes the fees it asked returning students to pay as surcharge after a riot
by the students had forced a closure of the institution.More info after the cut!!
It would be recalled that on Monday November 24,
2014 students of the University of Jos embarked on a peaceful demonstration on
what they described as imposition of illegal fees on them.
In order to avoid further escalation of the
situation, Management met and directed that the University should be closed
down until further notice.
In announcing the resumption of the university for
academic activities on Monday, February 23, 2015, and the commencement of the
botched second semester examinations, the authorities had asked all returning
students to pay N12,000 each as surcharge for facilities that were damaged
during the protest.
They were also mandated to sign an undertaking to
be of good behaviour during their remaining period as students of the
institution.
Sensing that this could be another invitation to a
fresh crisis, the national body of the students union was said was to have met
the authorities on the issue.
A statement by the Registrar, Mr. Danjuma
Jilli-Dandam, said after a meeting the management of the university and
officials of the National Association of Nigerian Students led by its National
President, Tijani Shehu, on Tuesday, the school had resolved that the surcharge
be reduced from N12, 000 to N6,000.
