According to a hostel mate ‘We were together
discussing sports when he excused us to fetch some items outside. Barely 30
minutes later, he was
lying in a
pool of his blood, his neck shattered by one of the two gunshots we heard not
far from the hostel’.
Lateef Babatunde, a 400 level computer science
student of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun, FUPRE, was
killed by unknown gunmen.
Academic activities grounded in the institution as
infuriated colleagues shut the school gates to protest the killing of
Babatunde.
Ominigbo Edafe, immediate past Speaker of the SUG
said: “What is important is that we stand by the same demand we have
highlighted in previous meetings.
Ugbomro
community is too hostile for FUPRE students. We cannot live there anymore. The
way out is for management to provide us alternative hostels where our safety
will be guaranteed. We want school-built hostels right in the heart of FUPRE
campus.
”Part of the challenges too is that the host
communities say they are not benefiting enough from the school and hey vent
their vengeful discontent on students who live around them. The bottom line is
that if the critical issues and our demands are not addressed satisfactorily,
no form of academic or management activity will be carried out in the school
from this moment.”
The insecurity being faced by students in FUPRE
has become unbearable and management is hardly concerned.
The school authorities has today announced the
postponement of the second semester 2013/2014 academic session resumption
initially slated for Monday August 11,2014.
The management also directs students presently on
campus to immediately vacate the hostels until further notice.
