UI students’ Union swears in new executive members

THE Students’ Union of the University of Ibadan (UI) last week, sworn in its newly-elected members, to pilot the affairs of the union for another session.
Held at the Trenched Hall of the institution, the president-elect of the union for the 2013/2014 session, Odesola Oluwafemi Victor, while delivering his inaugural speech, admitted that there is a need for revitalising, resuscitating and redeeming the true spirit and image of unionism, saying it has become imperative for the union to link and work towards the evolution of students' unions that would be positive, progressive, and at the same time confrontational.
Acknowledging the current administration of Professor Isaac Adewole, he opined that "we must acknowledge that the present authorities have done so much, but more still need to be done as journey to the university of our dreams is a long and tough one, but we will never shy away from toeing it together. As from today, we shall roll up our sleeeves just into the running current of waters of time."
Highlighting some setbacks which students encounter in the school community, he noted that in the areas of internet facilities; prompt and viable attendance at Jaja Clinic of the institution; exorbitant fee on the add and delete form amongst post-graduate students; irrelevant state of lecture theatres; undue stress for the clearance of graduating students and inefficiency on the part of the Industrial Training Coordinating Centre and situation of the kitchenette, the management must tackled dearly and promptly.
He therefore appealed to the management of the institution to be cooperative and helpful in meeting the yearnings of the students whose thumbprints have given the students' unionism hallowed responsibilities to shoulder, and rise to the occasion.
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Isaac Adewole, during his remark, commended the incoming president for his braveness, loyalty and courage, having delivered a student-friendly speech and urged students to learn to appreciate leaders, noting that not all the yearnings of the students would be well catered for, but few would be placed on the table to deliberate upon, so as to actualise its facilitation and establishment.
“We will always support our students with everything within our reach to make this university a better place for them and as far as we are concerned, we are ready to be open, accountable and transparent in our practices,” he said.
As part of the event, the union also unveiled the statue of Adekunle Ademuyiwa Adepeju, in front of Students’ Union Building (SUB). The 200-Level student of the Department of Agricultural Economics was killed by the Nigerian Police on February 1, 1971 in a peaceful protest he led to agitate for students welfares on campus.
The outgoing president of the Students’ Union, Babatunde Badmus while speaking at the commissioning of the statue, noted that the day was for the remembrance of the course the late Adekunle fought for.
He also thanked the Vice-Chancellor for creating good working relationship with members of the executive and generality of students on campus.
Professor Adewole in his commissioning speech said the day was a day of joy for students to remember what late Adekunle stood for while alive. He described the statue as the legacy project that will stand a test of time. A project that every Nigerian student would be proud of.
